Chiang Mai Night Market

June 12 - back to Chiang Mai for the evening.  Our guide, Alex, suggested that Marybeth and I venture out for the evening to what is called the "Night Market" in the city.  Streets are closed and villagers bring their wares to sell.  Entertainment was provided by several locals playing instruments - see photo - while we shopped for hours!  The weather was great with some clouds and a cool breeze blowing through the market area.  Along the street 40 - 50 chairs were set-up for providing traditional Thai massage for $10.  Lots of tourists as well as Thai residents were taking advantage of the massage opportunity.  Exotic food was being prepared while we watched (along with about a million flies).  Being sold was rice (several different types), noodles, fried bananas, fresh fruits such as pineapple, mango, watermelon,   jackfruit, and many others that we could not identify.  A villager was making a sweet dessert which looked very similar to our funnel cakes at home.  The waffles were covered in either fruit or sugar.  After a couple of great purchases (teak wood vases) we cheerfully headed back to the hotel for cool showers and a good night sleep.
