Salt Farming Near Damnern Suduak Thailand
June 12 - About an hour north of Bangkok we traveled by miles and miles of Salt Farms. Who knew that such a thing existed? I thought that salt came from Morton. Anyway, they looked very similar to fish hatcheries. What little research we have been able to do (no internet access) our guide Yellie explained that they pump in sea water into large open fields. Farmers let the sea water "dry out" and then they harvest the salt that is left behind. Farmers normally harvest their salt following the monsoon season. We were able to purchase 10 small bags (size of small travel kleenex package) of salt to share when we get home. Only cost about ten baht (.35) so it was a deal. The villagers use the salt for drying fish, brine, and commercial business. We saw the salt being used first-hand in many of the markets throughout Thailand.
