Mandalay Hill

We ended our long day by watching sunset from Mandalay Hill.  The hill is 954 feet high and covered with pagodas and images of Buddha.  We learned that the city actually took its name from this hill.  This is considered a very important site for pilgrimage for Buddhists throughout Myanmar.  The views were spectacular!  It's supposed to be about 40+ miles from Mandalay to the Chinese border.  We were told that there has been a huge influence of Chinese technology and industry to the city over the past couple of years.  It seemed to be quite an anachronism with modern shops and developing infrastructure accompanied by a backdrop of farmers working their fields with oxen and water buffalo used as draft animals.  I don't know that I like seeing this kind of growth and expansion in this lovely and charming country.
