June - we learned that in Yangon, it is against the law to ride a motorcycle in the city. The average family earns about $150 a month. No medical or dental insurance is available, and paying for medicine and dental work is quite costly. A gallon of gasoline costs about $5.00. Approximate number of Buddhists in the country is 80%, Christians 10% and Muslims 10%. Owning a satellite dish is illegal punishable by a 7 year prison term.
We also learned that crime rates are very low. Education is a requirement from age five (for a total of twelve years). The government provides education at no charge. Parents need to provide school uniforms for all children. We saw the green uniform fabric on sale at various shops. See photo. Jobs are plenty and young people show great respect for parents, grandparents, and teachers. An average day for most citizens is extremely long and physically demanding, but happiness is abound for their simplicity in life.
